When Lydia Welti-Escher wants to start a new life in Rome, she has no idea that her influential environment will do everything in her power to prevent this. The daughter of the politician and business leader Alfred Escher is a prisoner in the corset of social constraints and conventions – and at the same time fights for a self-determined life as a woman.

Married to Emil Welti, the son of a Federal Councillor, Lydia Welti-Escher entered into a liaison with the painter Karl Stauffer in Italy in the autumn of 1889. She feels understood by him, and she has had a close friendship with him for years. A short time later, she is admitted to the closed psychiatric clinic in Rome, initiated by the Swiss authorities. She is accused of a massive impairment of her mental abilities.
