Michelle enjoys her retirement in a picturesque village in Burgundy, roams the forest with her long-time friend on a mushroom hunt and drives her to the prison where her son is incarcerated. She has a strained relationship with her own daughter, Valérie, but she loves her grandson all the more. When the little one is supposed to spend the school holidays with her, a scandal ensues. Michelle, upset by Valérie's constant reproaches, serves her mushrooms – poisonous ones. Valérie recovers quickly, but Michelle is no longer allowed to see her grandson. Lonely and full of guilt, she falls into a depression. Until her friend's son is released from prison...

This time, the French master director François Ozon takes his audience into the seemingly tranquil life in the countryside. He designs his cinematic universe in great detail, so that you can literally smell the falling autumn leaves and grandmother's mushroom ragout. But subliminally and with a diabolical pleasure, Ozon raises doubts: Is it all a coincidence or planned long in advance?

"Quand vient l'automne" skilfully plays with the appeal of ambiguity. Hélène Vincent, Josiane Balasko, Ludivine Sagnier and Pierre Lottin shine in the leading roles.
