A man with an American passport in the name James Larkin White fiercely resists his arrest on the train at the Swiss border when he enters the country. He is accused of being the Swiss sculptor Anatol Stiller, who disappeared 7 years ago for unknown reasons.

But the arrested man insists on being James White. He is imprisoned for resisting a Swiss border official, and because there are doubts about the authenticity of his American passport. The missing Anatol Stiller, with whom he is mistaken, is accused of having been involved in a dubious "Smyrnov affair" before his disappearance.

The investigating judge, prosecutor Rolf Rehberg, and even White's public defender Dr. Bohnenblust doubt White's identity. Especially when Julika Stiller, who travels all the way from Paris, cannot clearly identify White as her missing husband
