Film adaptation of the novel by Max Frisch.

When he enters the country at the Swiss border, James Larkin White is arrested. He is suspected of being the disappeared Swiss sculptor Anatol Stiller. The missing man, with whom he is mistaken, is accused of having been involved in the "Smyrnov affair". The prosecutor, White's public defender and even Stiller's wife, who has come all the way from Paris, doubt his identity. Is White really the disappeared Anatol Stiller?
