Before books appeared bound in stores from the second half of the 19th century onwards, they were usually sold unbound and only provided with a cover by the local bookbinder. Coloured paper played a central role in this: artistically decorated papers that refined even simple covers as a decorative element and made the book a personal, often representative object. Whether marbled, combed, speckled or printed, coloured paper had a significant influence on European book aesthetics from the late 17th to the 19th century. They bear witness to the great variety of craftsmanship and design imagination and also tell stories about the taste, fashion and material availability of their time.
The exhibition (20.10.2025 - 21.12.2025) presents a selection of historical book bindings from the holdings of the State Archives of the Grisons and the Cantonal Library of the Grisons. It provides an insight into the colourful world of coloured paper and shows various production techniques and forms of use.
The exhibition opening on 20.10.2025 offers an introductory lecture and guided tour by curator Martin Heeb. Afterwards, there will be an aperitif.
