Fiona Trepp searched for traces of Bruno Manser for her Matura thesis (2025) in Nufenen - and found them. Thanks to interviews with contemporary witnesses and an insight into his diary at the time, an important contemporary document was created. The rainforest conservationist and human rights activist Bruno Manser, who was well-known during his lifetime, spent a lot of time outdoors as a child and was interested in the processes in nature. After high school, the native of Basel moved to Graubünden. At first, he worked on various cow alps during the summer months. In 1977, he took up a job as a shepherd in Nufenen. With his faithful dog, he herded around 500 sheep on Alp Jegena/Gadriola until 1983. Life on the alp was very simple. He documented life in words and beautiful drawings in his diary. He learned the daily craft from the locals, took part in the high hunt and was a welcome guest. In 1984, he moved to the rainforest of Borneo. Together with the local population, he campaigned against the deforestation of the rainforests there until the year 2000. Since then, he has been considered missing. In Nufenen, he left his mark - in the memories of the locals, through his views, his zest for action and his craftsmanship.
