Description
Day 1: We take a ride from Sedrun to the Nalps reservoir. From the parking lot above the dam crest, an old tank trail leads along the reservoir into the valley, which dates back to times when the military needed training grounds everywhere in the mountains. The hiking trail over the Nalps Pass was marked until the 1990s and we follow the old white/red markers on the left side of the stream. At first, the path is clearly visible, later it continues over boulders and occasionally we have to cross the stream without a bridge. Depending on the season, we reach a firn field earlier or later, where we confidently stride toward the pass. For the last altitude meters, we have to use our hands to climb the pass summit on partly slippery rubble and loose stones. Our full attention is now required as we continue westwards. Sometimes you can see tracks and occasionally a cairn, but there are no more markings. We now hike below Piz Blas, Piz Tanelin, and Piz Curnera with few minor ups and downs until the Cadlimo hut.
Day 2: We hike downhill on the hut trail. The Val Cadlimo is very rich in water; we pass wetlands and small lakes. Before point 2299, we find the junction for the white/blue marked path leading up to Lago di Dentro. At first, the path is still overbrush, higher up it becomes rockier. We reach a small pass from where we descend to Lago di Dentro, a jewel among mountain lakes. In Val Piora, we note: This is marmot territory! With a view of the extraordinary Pizzo delle Colombe, which seems so out of place here, we gently ascend along the Murinascia Grande until we reach Passo dell’uomo. The military has also left its traces here. On the last stretch along the Lukmanier reservoir, we end our hiking day. We take the post bus to Disentis and the train back to Sedrun.
Hidden Gem
It is best to plan the route in July, when there is still old snow.
Alternative for the second day: From Capanna Cadagno to Lake Ritom, with the funicular to Piotta and via Airolo, Göschenen, Oberalp Pass by train back to Sedrun.
Safety Note
The route over the Nalps Pass does not belong to the hiking trail network, it is not maintained and it is not marked.
