Description

Day 1: The first part of the hike we are with the hikers heading to Tomasee and Maighelshütte. Along the way in Val Maighels, we enjoy numerous natural beauties. In Plidutscha, the Rhine babbles down as a small brook; in the lakes Lai Urlaun and Lai Carin, the mountains are reflected; meandering watercourses are adorned with flowers and cotton grass; and at Piogn Crap, we take a single step across the Rein da Maighels, which squeezes through a narrow rock crevice here. On the plain Grava, we extend the large stone cairn colony with another specimen. Before Passo Bornengo, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse. Until well into July, firn lies on the slopes, and small turquoise-colored lakes form in the hollows. Instead of descending to Pian Bornengo, we choose the new route over the rocky and partly exposed ridge, eastwards to point 2872. Steps or rope-equipped sections facilitate the progress. But we repeatedly have to use our hands to help. At the uppermost small lake below the crest, we meet path traces leading down to Capanna Cadlimo again.

Day 2: Up to the mountain station of the Ritom funicular, five lakes line our path, each more beautiful than the last. The Lago di dentro is still close to the hut; further south we walk along the Lago Scuro, then follow the Laghetti di Tanedo, then the Lago di Tom, with its legendary sandy beach, and finally the reservoir Lago Ritom. The funicular, one of the steepest in Europe, takes us down to the Leventina.

Hidden Gem
