Description
On a high plateau at about 2000 meters above sea level lie the snow-safe Fideriser Heuberge. The small winter sports area with 100% natural snow is especially known for its 12-kilometer long toboggan run, one of the longest in the country. This also clearly shows how one can get back to the valley.
The trail starts at the mountain guesthouse Arflina and initially follows the winter hiking trail. This is soon left, and after about 20 minutes of ascent you overlook the Clunersee plain amidst the untouched winter landscape. Beneath the snow cover lies a nationally significant flat bog – in winter, a perfect snowshoeing area! After about 250 meters of altitude gain, the first intermediate goal follows: the Arflinafurgga pass crossing. Here a break is worthwhile to enjoy the panorama: the view sweeps over the gentle southern slopes of the Schanfigg and further towards central Grisons, or back into the basin of the Heuberge as well as northwards into the St. Antönien valley and to the limestone cliffs of the Rätikon.
From here follows about a two-kilometer long ridge crossing, where you sometimes briefly switch to the south side if the terrain requires it. Soon the steep ascent ridge of the Mattjisch Horn (2461 m) comes into view. Shortly before this ascent, however, the trail turns off and leaves the ridge. The descent initially takes place at the foot of the impressive northern slope of the Mattjisch Horn. Then a rock head is bypassed and after a somewhat steeper section the snow-covered lower Clunersee is reached. A short counter-ascent is still necessary before the loop of the circular route closes again.
Hidden Gem
Combine the route with a fondue treat and a thrilling toboggan run on one of the longest toboggan runs in the Alps (12 km).
Safety Note
The marked snowshoe route leads into unsecured, partly alpine winter terrain. It is up to each tour participant to equip themselves fully and to inform themselves about snow and avalanche conditions before the tour.
The time indication is a guideline in good conditions for fairly experienced tour participants. Time indications for snowshoe tours can vary greatly depending on conditions, equipment and fitness. Plan enough time and start early for the planned route!
This route description and the marking on the terrain do not constitute a tour recommendation. Every decision to proceed lies solely with the individual tour participant. It is strongly advised against proceeding in poor visibility conditions (fog, snowfall, etc.) or increased avalanche risk. Attention spring conditions: From about March and generally on warm and/or very sunny days, tours must be ended early.
Equipment
Well-functioning snowshoes, poles with winter discs, good footwear, winter-appropriate clothing. The wind can significantly lower the perceived temperature in winter: don't forget winter gloves, hat, thermos bottle, etc.!
Carrying a complete winter touring equipment including an avalanche transceiver is recommended on the marked snowshoe trail as well as generally on all tours in open alpine terrain.
