Description

We start the hike at the Palfries mountain station. With the Palfriesbahn, we have previously overcome around 1,250 metres in altitude in just 12 minutes. The train travels over an impressive waterfall (Ragnatscher Bach) and takes us up to the Palfries plateau.

On this hike (start at the mountain station) the children also have fun. It is varied and not strenuous. The hiking trail leads over the Chamm, which is covered with Swiss stone pines, and then across the alpine pasture to the large car park. Shortly before the end of the hike, we meet the Palfries mountain inn, where we can enjoy the wide view of the southernmost mountains of the canton of St. Gallen and the Glarus Alps.

Geheimtipp

A walk over the ridge planted with many Swiss stone pines makes the hearts of the children beat faster. Enjoy the view of the southernmost mountains of the canton of St. Gallen and the Glarus Alps from the Berggasthaus Palfries.

Ausrüstung

Daytime hiking backpack (approx. 20 litres) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable footwear, weather-adapted and durable clothing in the multi-layer principle, if necessary telescopic poles, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, mobile phone, possibly headlamp, map material

Directions

From the mountain station we hike on the asphalted alpine road in a southeasterly direction to the parking lot on the Chamm. There we turn left through the fenced parking lot and along the striking border fence over the alpine pasture. At the top is a dry stone wall. We will follow this a few meters in a northerly direction and you are already in front of a recessed bench, where the entrance is located. This path winds through the sparse pine / Swiss stone pine forest. Initially, the hiking trail climbs a bit and then leads comfortably through the rest of the forest section. Soon we come across the crossing, white-red-white marked mountain path, which leads from the Wartau side over the Chamm to the Palfries plateau. There we turn half left and follow the mountain trail marking over the alpine pasture. After about 500 m, the path branches off to the left and shortly afterwards we come across the road that leads us back to the starting point.

If we want to enjoy the alpine flora a quarter of an hour longer, then we do not branch off and continue the hike on the more or less flat path, until we reach the mountain path Alvier (2342 m above sea level). Here we take the path downhill, where we will arrive within a very short time to the parking lot belonging to the mountain inn Palfires. The hiking time from here back to the starting point (mountain station Palfries) is a quarter of an hour.
