Description

We start the hike at the lighthouse on the Oberalp Pass. On the first section, up to the fork at point 2056, we are accompanied by the Tomasee hiking birds, then by those heading to the Maighel hut. Below the hut, however, we turn right towards the Lolen Pass, which in Romansh language is called Pass Tagliola.

The Lolen Pass is a delight. The valley gently slopes westward. The stream, which is initially only a trickle, gathers more water and forms mossy areas and small ponds. We reach the first valley level and leave the stream course to descend in a curve to an alp. From the second valley level, a zigzag path leads down into the Unteralp valley. We are sent back and forth 48 times until we reach the valley floor.

On a forest road, we continue our hike towards the Vermigel hut. However, we save ourselves the ascent to the hut and switch beforehand to the hiking trail to the Maighel Pass. The climb resumes. We overcome approximately 500 vertical meters at a leisurely pace. On hot days, a swim in the lake before the Maighel Pass is a tempting reward.

At Piogn Crap we allow ourselves a little thrill. Here we can cross the wild Rein da Maighels in one step, as the water squeezes through a narrow rock crevice. We see the Maighel hut ahead and gladly accept a five-minute climb to enjoy a beer on the terrace. From the hut, we hike back to the Oberalp Pass.

Hidden Gem

At Piogn Crap, cross the Rein da Maighels in a single step, where it forces its way through a deep rock crevice.

Safety Note

Fairtrail: Hikers share the path with mountain bikers on certain sections.

Equipment

Binoculars: We are hiking through ibex territory

Directions

From the Oberalp Pass, we follow the white/red hiking trail towards Tomasee - Rhine source, which first leads downhill along the pass road for a few hundred meters. A high-altitude trail now leads into Val Maighels. At the fork at point 2056, we continue southwards. We encounter a forest road that leads to the Maighel hut. Below the hut, however, we leave this road and choose the hiking trail southwest towards the Lolen Pass. We stay on this path until the Unteralp valley. When we reach a road again, we head uphill until we reach the junction to the Maighel Pass. Now we are back on a hiking trail, which leads us on the left side of the valley past the Vermigel hut. At the Maighel Pass, we descend into Val Maighels and follow the path always downhill. Again, upon reaching the small lakes, we follow the forest road further downhill. At the fork that we know from the morning, we turn left on the hiking trail back to the Oberalp Pass.
