Description
The starting point Davos stretches along the Landwasser Valley to Thusis. Passing idyllic Walser settlements, until 1974 road traffic was exclusively over the road in the valley of the Zügen Gorge, which is often avalanche-prone in winter. A highlight is the renowned Landwasser viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway, one of the most famous structures and one of the most photographed sights in Graubünden. Another highlight shortly after Thusis is the Viamala Gorge, a unique natural experience. It was once hated; in Romansh, Viamala = "bad path" was what the old drovers called the wild, deep Viamala Gorge through which the Hinterrhein roars. Today people travel there precisely because of the spectacular world of water and the cliffs up to 300 meters high. The path winds further up into the mountain world to the San Bernardino Pass, from where you can already feel the southern flair. In Bellinzona it becomes very summery because the canton capital of Ticino represents the Italian Switzerland. A stop is worthwhile here not only for a coffee but also to visit the Bellinzona fortress, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The road then continues via the north-south connection over the Lukmanier Pass to Disentis. From there, the route follows the entire Graubünden highlands along the natural spectacle of the Rhine Gorge – the Grand Canyon of Switzerland – via Versam to Bonaduz, Chur, and Landquart from where it goes back through the Prättigau to Davos.
