Long route to the Ticino border with a visit to the Maighel hut (SAC-S)
Details
Description
At Oberalppass we first expect a short descent to Alp Milez. Here we fit the skins and follow the markings to the Maighel hut, which we initially leave to the left. It stretches until we can ascend to the Maighel glacier at the elevation of Piz Alpetta. In regular switchbacks we gain height, our destination, Piz Borel, lies directly in front of us. We head for the notch on the far left and make a ski depot. Now we cross the rocky and partially airy ridge to the summit. At the summit cross we expect great views to the north up to Oberalppass and to the south towards the Ticino peaks.
The descent over the snow-covered glacier is a dream, but unfortunately over far too quickly. And unfortunately the valley floor is so flat that we have to fit the skins again.
We now stop at the Maighel hut to quench hunger and thirst. Highly recommended is the Café Maighels, a special house recipe! The young, motivated hut couple is, if time allows, also available for a lively chat.
As the last highlight of the day, we still ascend to Piz Cavradi where more powder snow slopes await us down to Tschamut. From Tschamut a train runs hourly in both directions.
Variant: If the wine tasted too good at noon, we can save Piz Cavradi for another time and descend directly to Tschamut.

Directions
From Oberalppass we descend to Alp Milez and follow the route markings to the Maighel hut. However, we always stay in the valley until we branch off to the Maighel glacier at the elevation of Piz Alpetta. In wide switchbacks, we reach the notch at the foot of Piz Ravetsch. Here we make a ski depot. We cross the ridge to the summit and return the same way. Descent along the ascent track. The ascent to Piz Cavradi begins just behind the Maighel hut. We cross the summit in an easterly direction and descend over the northern slopes to Tschamut
