Description

We first hike with our snowshoes packed on the winter hiking trail to the Sontga Gada chapel. If the new suspension bridge over the Rhine is cleared, we can save the descent to the river. Otherwise, there is a descent and ascent of 100 meters in altitude. Upon reaching Mompé Medel, we briefly put on the snowshoes again until we reach the Bar La Scurslada. Continuing uphill, the landscape opens up and is vast; sometimes we pass individual firs or birches, then again a Maiensäss. Before the Stagias height, we share the ascent for a while with sledders, so caution is advised. At the Academia Vivian we take a break, leaning against the warm, sun-warmed wooden wall and see what our rucksack has to offer. If there is a bottle of wine along: all the better! Because we take our time at this beautiful spot.

Downhill we follow the signposts towards Mutschnengia, but we can also make our own tracks across the open field and kick up the snow under our snowshoes. We make a short detour to the panoramic restaurant of the Hotel Cuntera in Mutschnengia. The small village is inhabited year-round, and a little walk between the barns is worthwhile. Behind the last houses, an interesting suspension bridge spans the small valley. With packed snowshoes, we walk on the cleared and little-traveled road to Curaglia, from where the post bus brings us back to Disentis.

Hidden Gem

The Academia Vivian can be rented for events of any kind. It is suitable for private events, family celebrations, as well as theme days with schools and universities or as a retreat space for companies.

Safety Note

The route is signposted, but those unfamiliar with the area are advised to print out the topographic map for the tour and carry it with them.

Equipment

Safety equipment (AVS, probe, shovel) not necessary

Directions

The route begins at the information board near the Disentis Sports Center. We follow the signposted snowshoe trail to Mompé Medel. At the upper end of the village, the pink signs guide us further, partly across open terrain and partly on a winter hiking trail to Stagias. From here we continue following the signs or make our own tracks in the fresh snow until we reach the road to Curaglia. We put on our snowshoes.
