Description

Casper Nicca takes you on his hike along the meadows and pastures on the upper Schamserberg, where he meets various people. At selected locations, you can listen to exciting audio stories on your smartphone.

Schamserberg, shaped by centuries of management, is a near-natural cultural landscape that is home to a variety of animal and plant species. Among the richest habitats in the cultural landscape are dry meadows and pastures. The hike leads you along the magnificent diversity of meadows and pastures on the upper Schamserberg to the observation bench.

At the start in Mathon is the exhibition «mia natira». It forms the core of the project «Meadows and Pastures on the Schamserberg». The converted caravan turned interactive exhibition is open daily. Here you will find the overview map of the upper Schamserberg, showing selected located meadows and pastures as well as typical plant and animal species.

Directions

The start of the hike is in Mathon. After the ascent to the summer alpine farm Mursenas, the route continues for about 2.5 km at altitude through dry meadows and pastures. At Faschas, the hiking trail crosses the mountain brook Valtschiel and passes a flat moor. From here it descends over pastures partly grown with alders to the summer alpine farm Dumagns. The further descent leads over grazed fescue grasslands down to Wergenstein. The route leads back to Mathon through forest and larch forest pastures. Note: A detour to the mountain village Wergenstein is definitely worthwhile. Here you have the opportunity to stop for a meal, visit the ibex exhibition, and return to Mathon by post bus.
