Description

The blue-and-white marked hiking trail passes small lakes, over rock and scree ridges, loose gravel and rock slabs. From the Casnil Sud pass you can enjoy a magnificent view and look directly at the impressive north face of the Cima dal Cantun and over the entire glaciated Forno basin. If you are lucky, you may even see ibexes.Good footing is required, but chains and climbing aids are installed in the most difficult places.
The chains are installed at the beginning of summer.

Can be planned as a several-day tour with an overnight stay in the Albigna or the Forno Hut.  Or as a one-day tour without ascent to the Forno Hut.

Geheimtipp

Take a multi-day tour with overnight stays in a hut - see Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia

Sicherheitshinweis

Challenging mountain hike on blue-white route. There are several exposed passages that are secured with chains. You need to be sure-footed.

The safety devices and chains along the trail are installed at the beginning of summer. Find out in advance at the huts whether the trail is already passable. We strongly advise against walking the trail without the chains in place!

Ausrüstung

Bring hiking boots, possibly ice axes

Directions

Follow the blue-white marked trail up past the small lakes and over a prominent rock scree ridge to the Casnil Sud pass at 2940m. A section between the small lakes and the Casnil pass requires some caution, but is equipped with handholds and step bars.
From the Casnil Sud pass you enjoy a magnificent view and look directly at the impressive north face of the Cima dal Cantun. If you are lucky, you may even see ibexes. From the pass, the trail descends over loose gravel (still snow-covered early in summer; take an ice axe if necessary) into a wide scree basin.

At the end of this, the trail turns left and you soon reach the passage secured with chains and iron steps under the ridge spur of the Piz Casnil east ridge. Good surefootedness is required here. Less experienced hikers can use a climbing harness with via ferrata set for additional safety. The trail continues down over rock slabs to the Forn Valley and further down to Maloja via Lake Cavloc.
