Description

The glacier forefield, watercourses, and a primeval flat moor with rare flora and fauna make the Val Frisal one of the most impressive high valleys in the Alps.

The starting point of the hike from Brigels is located in Cuort, directly at the Flem stream, beside which the chapel Sogn Sievi (year 1183) greets you. Just before the small bridge, a natural road branches off to the left into the romantically wild valley "Val Frisal", which leads to the "high plateau Val Frisal". Always following the softly murmuring Flem stream, the path steadily rises – accompanied by the spicy scent of conifers and a colorful alpine flora. On the left side of the trail near "Chischarolas" is the entrance to the smallest but highest situated spruce primeval forest in Europe, the "Uaul Scatlè". Soon, the distinctive Kistenstöckli (2745 m) and shortly thereafter the Pèz d'Artgas (2786 m) come into view. At "Paliu da Rubi" the valley briefly opens, the path becomes narrower and steeper – and suddenly they appear: the three-thousanders. Then, in all their glory, it lies before you – the wide high plateau of Val Frisal, majestically framed by rock walls and the glacier.

For the return, a short detour up to Crap Cavigliauna (2073 m) is worth it, from where a last overwhelming view over the valley opens. The descent then leads back over Alp Nova to the route, which is reached again shortly behind "Chischarolas".

Hidden Gem

Those who want to experience even more of the impressive landscape of Val Frisal will find special highlights off the main path:

  • Off-trail continuing hike: Along the northern valley side, one can confidently proceed up to the glacier forefields near Durschin – a real adventure in untouched nature.
  • Ancient spruce primeval forest: When passing by Chischarolas, a look into the Uaul Scatlè, the highest situated spruce primeval forest in Europe, is worthwhile.
  • Perfect for a break: Directly at the stream near Chischarolas, there is a beautiful barbecue site – ideal for a rest in the middle of nature.

Safety Note

The route should not be started in uncertain weather conditions. Weather changes in the mountains are frequent. If a rain front or similar approaches during the hike, you should turn back in time.

Equipment

Good hiking boots with a good tread, weather-appropriate clothing (rain jacket/sun protection), change of clothes, first aid kit, drink, provisions, possibly hiking sticks.
