Description

We start the hike at the Palfries mountain station. With the Palfries cable car, we have previously overcome about 1,250 meters in altitude in just 12 minutes. The cable car passes over an impressive waterfall (Ragnatscher Bach) and brings us up to the Palfries plateau.

After a paved section, the beautifully laid out and varied path leads us gently uphill over small bridges through wonderful vegetation. If we are lucky, we discover rare flowers visited by various butterflies and (wild) bees. The view back into the St. Gallen Rhine Valley rewards us for the well over 170 meters of altitude we had to overcome.

Hidden Gem

During the alpine spring, besides other alpine flowers, many gentians surprise visitors on the Palfries plateau. It is also possible that we even spot a white gentian off the path.

Equipment

Day hiking backpack (approx. 20 liters) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable footwear, weather-appropriate and durable layered clothing, if necessary telescopic poles, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, mobile phone, if needed headlamp, map material

Directions

From the mountain station we hike on the paved alpine road in a southeast direction to the Chamm. Then we continue downhill along the road and further towards Labria. In dry weather, the shortcut over the alpine pasture can also be chosen from the Chamm. Afterwards, we turn left and follow the hiking trail into the Hinterelabria area. The very nicely laid out and varied path leads gently uphill over small bridges through wonderful vegetation. If we are lucky, we discover rare flowers visited by various butterflies and wild bees. The view into the St. Gallen Rhine Valley rewards us for the 170 meters of altitude we have to overcome.

At the pass, the vastness of the Palfries plateau becomes really apparent. We have reached the highest point of the hike. There we turn slightly right and follow the marked mountain path. During the alpine spring, we are surprised by many gentians besides other alpine flowers. It is also possible that we even spot a white one off the path. We follow the white-red-white marked mountain path to the Palfries mountain guesthouse or back to the mountain station.
If we want to enjoy a magnificent alpine flora for fifteen minutes longer, then we do not branch off and continue the hike on the more or less level path until we reach the Avier mountain path (2,342 m above sea level). Here we take the path downhill, where we will arrive at the parking lot belonging to the Palfries mountain guesthouse in a very short time. The hiking time from here back to the starting point, namely the Palfries mountain station, is fifteen minutes.
