Description
The Lago Bianco on the Bernina Pass is one of the largest in the entire Engadine (3 km in length and a full 21 million cubic meters of water), and has been artificially enlarged for hydroelectric exploitation. The trip starts from the Ospizio Bernina railway station. From the station, you head south along the dirt road that runs along the lake to the dam. Immersed in a high-altitude landscape, the panorama is truly spectacular. Up to the dam, you walk just over 2.5 km; from here you leave the road that descends towards Alp Grüm to cross to the other shore of the lake, following an easy path that leads in the opposite direction to Plan Cambrena. After a few steps, you reach the north dam. Following it, the circular route will quickly close by returning to the station. The entire perimeter of the lake is about 8 km long.
