Description

The valley hike in the Rhine Forest along the young Hinterrhein begins in Sufers at the Sufner reservoir. The old transit route of the "viaSpluga" takes you to the Splügen castle ruins, the only castle complex in the Rhine Forest, and on to the village of Splügen. Splügen is a typical pass village with tanned Walser houses and Italian palazzi and was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society in 1995 for the exemplary protection of the townscape.

In Splügen, the bridge over the Hinterrhein is crossed and on the right side of the valley it continues to Medels, Nufenen and Hinterrhein.

Hinterrhein is considered to be the oldest documented Walser settlement in the canton of Graubünden. Sights in Hinterrhein are the Alte Landbrugg and the Bachhuus-Chäller, a 300-year-old vaulted cellar, which has been spruced up and converted into a cozy restaurant where food and drink are available by appointment. The villages of the Rhine Forest are located on the PostBus route. You can hike from village to village as you wish.
