The Passo della Tegiola is the easiest passage between Val Bregaglia and Val Codera.
Details
Description
It is a worthwhile route, which however, especially downwards, stretches out a lot. The ascent runs along the Bergell valley flank, initially through forest, alternating with the cheerful clearings of the Monti di Villa. Further up you reach the alpine meadows of Val Casnaggina, whose stream marks the border line. The path over the pass descends through Val Codera, which is followed in the flat valley floor. Along the way, you encounter the villages of Bresciadega and Codera: these are the two main places in the valley, inhabited almost all year round. You can complete the entire hike in one day or optionally stay overnight at Rifugio Brasca or other accommodations in Val Codera.
Safety Note
The gully leading up to the pass on the Bergell side can be snow-covered at the beginning of the season; then it is advisable to have an ice axe with you. Good footwear is a must.
Red-white markings along the entire route; signs at the main intersections.
Equipment
Mountain boots, packed meal, possibly an ice axe if the gully leading to the pass is icy
Directions
From Canete walk about a hundred meters on the road for agricultural and forestry traffic and then turn right onto the mule track that leads to the Scalotta meadow terrace (883 m). At the junction turn left and cross the Vertura stream on the bridge. On this section you cross the new road several times, which leads up to the Monti di Villa but can only be used with a driving permit from the municipality.
Further uphill you pass the alpine farms Tabiadascio and Campaccio in succession until you reach Roccolo, located on the edge of a meadow terrace at the western end of the Laghetti (1243 m). The path does not lead to this alpine farm but diagonally along the right side of a depression; later you enter the forest, which you do not leave until Foppate (1378 m). Upon reaching a mountain meadow at the tree line, you continue on path traces along the gravel bed of a small stream and then ascend through a valley cut full of dense alder bushes.
Above this you reach the open slopes of the high Val Casnaggina. Zigzagging left stepwise over rocky terrain you aim for a scree gully that falls from the Bocchetta della Teggiola. Climb as centrally as possible and thus reach the Bocchetta della Tegiola at 2490 m altitude.
On the Val Codera side descend a steep scree slope and reach the middle of a hollow between the ridges falling from Pizzo dei Vanni. On this plateau you see the ruins of the customs post, which was continuously staffed up until around the fifties (an anti-smuggling measure). Below, descend over steep grassy slopes downwards to the junction with the path to the Pedroni-Del Pra bivouac. Continue descending along a good path and arrive at the huts of Alp Sivigia (1939 m).
From here continue walking on the path embedded in a considerable rock ledge. At its base, you continue for a while through the flat valley, partially along the left edge of the stream bed. Through a beautiful forest you reach Rifugio Brasca (1304 m). A forest road leads to the hamlet Bresciadega (1241 m) and then continues almost level to Codera (825 m). The last section descends on the mule track with steps down to Novate Mezzola. To return to the starting point, take the train to Chiavenna and the remaining stretch by bus.
