Description

It starts right behind the Promulins Arena on the start section of the Women’s Engadin Ski Marathon. Instead of running towards Bever, turn right and after the underpass, pass the wooden arch bridge over the Inn heading to Gravatscha. Here you cross the Inn and Flaz rivers. The Inn was renatured at this spot during the flood protection project from 2002-2005, and the Flaz – the second river to be crossed – was relocated into a new riverbed on the Muottas Muragl valley side. Along the Gravatscha lakes, the cross-country loop leads on the Engadin Ski Marathon trail towards the freshly renatured Innauen near Bever. After the loop around Bever (with the option to extend the cross-country loop to Spinas), the final sprint takes place parallel to the new double track of the Rhaetian Railway on the start section of the Women’s Engadin Ski Marathon.

A natural paradise thanks to revitalisation

The Inn floodplains near Bever are the result of one of Switzerland's largest water revitalisation projects. In two stages, the previously canalised Inn was restored to a near-natural state by 2020. Where dams on both sides used to constrain the water, the river can now flow freely – up to 200 metres wide during floods. This dynamic floodplain landscape of national importance is constantly changing due to high and low water levels – the Inn forms new gravel banks, islands and riparian landscapes, creating valuable habitats for rare pioneer plants and endangered animal species such as the common sandpiper. Even a family of beavers feels at home here! The revitalised Inn floodplains are not only a boon for biodiversity, but also an attractive local recreation area that delights locals and visitors alike.
