Description

Poschiavo is located at about 1000 meters above sea level. But thanks to its south-facing location and the relatively mild climate, there are favourable conditions for the cultivation of fruit and vegetables – quite different from the neighbouring Engadine, which was supplied with fresh produce from Valposchiavo across the Bernina Pass until the Second World War.

For this purpose, slopes were terraced in the valley to gain vegetable cultivation areas. The former gardens have disappeared, in some places the forest has reconquered the terrain, but the original, stepped terrain is still clearly visible in some places.

Such relics by Runchett Sotsassa are particularly visible. The viewpoint is only a little more than a hundred meters higher than the valley floor, but offers a great view of the town and the surrounding mountains. In two relatively flat places, wooden benches invite you to linger and enjoy the view.

Geheimtipp

The Casa Tomé in Poschiavo is considered one of the oldest farmhouses in the Alpine region and houses an impressive museum.

Sicherheitshinweis

Preferably feasible during the summer months.

Directions

The route is signposted as a mountain hiking trail (white-red-white, difficulty level T3). The starting point of the circular hike is the Poschiavo train station. Across the town you reach the northern edge of the old town centre. From there, a narrow path leads over meadows and through forest to Ronchett Sotsassa. Despite the proximity to the settlement area, the route should not be underestimated: the terrain is partially exposed; an almost vertical couloir is overcome with a covered wooden bridge, another, also exposed zone is secured on the slope side with chains. Through the historic city center you return to the train station via Via da Palaz.
