Details
Description
An impressive staircase paved with stone slabs leads to the pass crossing at 2,724 m above sea level – a relic from times when cows and cattle were driven from Bergell to pasture in Madris in summer. The upper part of the Madris valley was already opened and agriculturally used by Bergell from the 14th century, which gives the route a special historical charm.
Shortly after the pass, special attention is required: here are some exposed passages secured with chains. It is important to follow exclusively the white-red-white marked trail signs, as traces of old routes are still visible in the rockfall-prone scree channels. The long descent takes place on narrow mountain trails with numerous hairpin bends and offers repeatedly impressive views into the Bergell mountain world.
After passing the alpine settlements of Lăira and Däir, the path leads down shady forest trails to Soglio. At 1,100 m above sea level, hikers will find a village rich in history, which, with its Mediterranean flair, narrow alleys, and sun-drenched stone houses, forms an impressive end to this expressive stage.

An impressive staircase paved with stone slabs leads to the pass crossing at 2,724 m above sea level, dating back to the time when livestock from Bergell were driven to summer pasture in Madris. The upper valley section was already cultivated from Bergell in the 14th century, giving this route its special historical character.
Shortly after the pass, a challenging section with exposed passages secured by chains follows. Special caution is advised here, and it is essential to follow the white-red-white marked trail signs exactly – old traces of earlier routes in the rockfall-prone scree fields must not be entered.
The subsequent long descent leads through numerous hairpin bends on narrow mountain paths down into Bergell. Breathtaking views open again and again onto the distinctive peaks and deep-cut valleys of the region. After passing the alpine settlements of Lăira and Däir, the path finally runs through shady woods and reaches the picturesque village of Soglio at 1,100 m above sea level.
With its Mediterranean charm, narrow alleys, and sun-drenched stone houses, Soglio offers an impressive conclusion to this alpine and culturally historically significant stage.
