Schanfigger Höhenweg: Stage 4

Details
Description
The fourth stage begins with a steep ascent to the Strelapass. After a flat section along the rocky path, a one-hour ascent to the watershed follows. Then you have overcome the altitude meters and the rest of the route can be completed comfortably. The panoramic view of the Prättigau is breathtaking. The contrast between the barren ski area and the beautiful Fondei is impressive. "Hardly any high valley in the Alps has such a well-preserved Walser cultural landscape. Sun-burnt wooden houses are scattered in blooming mountain meadows. A picture that probably applied for centuries to many Walser areas. Unlike many Walser settlements, the Fondei was verifiably inhabited year-round for 600 years with a population of over two hundred people. Only with the expansion of the transport routes and the removal of the hay loads at the end of the 19th century did the valley become depopulated." (Mettier-Heinrich, high valley Fondei).
