Description

This gravel bike tour starts in Thusis and first leads directly to the spectacular Viamala Gorge. The gorge, which is cut up to 300 metres deep with its steep rock faces, is one of the most impressive natural monuments in the region and is a scenic highlight of the tour right from the start.

After passing through the gorge, the route follows a mountain road with great views up towards Lohn. The steady ascent runs on well-developed asphalt with little traffic and offers impressive panoramic views of the Schamsertal and the surrounding mountains.

From Lohn, the route continues in the direction of Casti. The descent is fluid and easy to ride and combines scenic enjoyment with a sporty skiing experience. This is followed by the return journey along the valley axis back to Thusis, where the route is again varied between road, path and short gravel sections.

The tour is ideal for gravel bike riders with a good basic level of fitness who are looking for a compact, scenically very intense loop.

Please note that the path through the "Lost Hole" is closed from November to April.

Safety Note

The route runs partly on public roads, including sections with motorized traffic. Accordingly, a defensive driving style is required. In the Viamala Gorge, the roadway is narrow in places, and moisture and shady areas can also cause slippery conditions.

In wet conditions or after rain, the gravel and cobblestone sections in particular should be driven with increased caution. Weather conditions can change quickly in the gorge area, which is why weather-appropriate clothing is recommended.

Your own driving style must be adapted to the current road and weather conditions at any time. The use of a helmet is strongly recommended.

Equipment

  • Gravel bike
  • Helmet recommended
  • Weather-appropriate clothing, especially windproof and rainproof
  • Warm extra layer for cooler sections in the gorge
  • Enough drinking water
  • Small snacks for the road
  • Optional: gloves and goggles

Directions

The tour starts in Thusis and first leads downhill towards the Viamala Gorge. After just a few kilometres, you will reach the entrance to the gorge, where the route follows the historic traffic axis. This section runs mainly on asphalt roads and offers impressive views down into the gorge, which is up to 300 metres deep.

After passing the Viamala Gorge, the steady ascent begins on the mountain road towards Lohn. The route is well developed, has little traffic and has a constant gradient. During the ascent, wide views of the Schamsertal and the surrounding mountain landscape open up several times.

In Lohn, the route changes to a descent towards Casti. This section is also on asphalt and can be ridden smoothly. After reaching Casti, the route follows the valley axis and leads back towards Thusis via a combination of road and path sections.

The last section runs mostly downhill or flat and takes cyclists back to the starting point in Thusis via well-developed paths.
