Description

In a wonderful landscape, the world of smugglers can be explored. The two-day mountain hike around the Madrisa is an exciting journey of discovery on both sides of the Swiss-Austrian border. It is hiked on historical paths at altitudes between 1,900 and 2,600 m. A GPS device accompanies you and shows you the secrets of the smugglers, the so-called "coffee holes". Centuries ago, a lively trade developed between the valleys of Montafon and Prättigau. Through the state border, the trade became illegal. Today, the path across the border is freely accessible and offers unique nature experiences and exciting stories.

At the starting point at the Madrisa cable car in Klosters you will receive a GPS device and all information about your smuggling tour. This includes the coordinates for the first hiding place. Along the route there are 12 smugglers' depots. All depots contain interesting facts about the world of smugglers and a puzzle that you can use to find the next hiding place on your route. A former customs hut at the border serves as a shelter and you will learn interesting things about smuggling, as well as details about famous smuggler personalities on both sides of the border.

You will spend the afternoon and evening at Schafberg Hüsli. The booked package includes accommodation and a hearty dinner as well as a hearty breakfast for an optimal start to the second smuggling day.

After completing your hike, hand in your GPS device at the valley station of the cable car. There a reward awaits you for the successfully mastered smuggler tour.

Detailed information about the smuggling tour can be found at: www.schmugglerland.com

Directions

Day 1: From the Saaser Alp we hike effortlessly on a remarkable high-altitude trail over the Zügenhüttli to the Älpli and over Schwarz Bach to the Schlappiner Joch. In about 2 hours we reach the Schlappiner Joch and then pass the state border. Through the idyllic Valzifenz Valley we descend further. We walk past the Upper Valzifenzalpe, Valzifenzalpe and Madrisahütte. From the Madrisahütte we descend along the Valzifenzbach and reach the valley station of the Gargellen cable cars after about 35 minutes. The last meters of altitude are mastered with the Gargellen mountain railways.

2: Start of the tour is at the mountain restaurant Schafberg Hüsli in Gargellen. From here you follow the signs to the Gafierjoch (about 1 hour). The hike leads us below the Gargellner Köpfe, past the Schafbergsee (storage pond), until we reach the Gafierjoch after about half an hour and cross the border into Switzerland. At the Gafierjoch we first keep to the right and then it goes down a short, steep way before we tackle the ascent in the direction of Rätschenjoch. From the Gafierjoch you can reach the Rätschenjoch in about 1.5 hours. At the Rätschenjoch the highest point of the tour is reached and you can enjoy the view of the Bernina Group, the Rätikon and the Silvretta. Next we reach the high valley Chüecalanda and over green ridges of Glatteggen we reach Obersäss. In Obersäss we reach a promising rest area. We descend further and reach Untersäss and then the Madrisabahn mountain station at the Saaser Alp.
