Description

From the Cavaglia stop, which with its hipped roof is reminiscent of the houses in the Bernese Oberland and was originally built as a hotel, the path first leads to the hamlet of Cavaglia, which was inhabited all year round until 1972 and where there was even a school. The employees of Forze Motrici di Brusio (now Repower), who worked in the nearby power plants, lived here. After leaving the village behind us, we continue along the RhB line towards Val di Pila. With a bit of luck, we will reach the elegant Punt da Pila railroad bridge just as a train crosses it.

On the other side of the valley, the path turns back towards Cavaglia. Instead of going into the hamlet, however, it now follows the slope and past the imposing power station to Li Vegli at the northern end of the plateau. The Cavaglia power station went into operation in the fall of 1927. It was built according to the plans of Nicolaus Hartmann jun. who was responsible for numerous buildings along the Bernina line (e.g. the station buildings on Alp Grüm and Ospizio Bernina). For his design, he was inspired on the one hand by classic fortress construction and on the other by the typical Engadine house, which is particularly evident in the large archway.

Along the Cavagliasco, the path leads across the Cavaglia plateau back to its starting point, the Cavaglia train stop. From here, you can either take the train south towards Poschiavo or north via Alp Grüm and the Bernina Pass to Pontresina.

Rhaetian Railway

It went into operation over 100 years ago: the Bernina line. Direct train service between St. Moritz and Tirano began in 1910. 61 kilometers of the highest railway engineering against the backdrop of the highest mountain in Graubünden. This special treat, which runs past the mighty Palü and Morteratsch glaciers, combining southern joie de vivre and alpine beauty, can be experienced every day on the Bernina Express. But sometimes the exposed curves and the overwhelming mountain panorama take your breath away.
