Mittelbünden is considered the unknown beauty of Graubünden. Many know the Schanfigg and the Prättigau from passing through, but here lie some of Graubünden's mountain biking gems. The three-day mountain bike hut route through the alpine mountain world of Mittelbünden visits two of the most extraordinary mountain huts.

Description

The second day begins with a wonderful breakfast at the Heimeli mountain inn and the subsequent descent down to Langwies. The route partly follows the gravel road, but just below the mountain inn it also runs along a good section of wonderfully flowing single trails. The village of Langwies at the end of the descent is the starting point for the long ascent into the Fondei valley. A narrow asphalt road leads to the Walser village of Strassberg, located 550 meters higher. But the highest point has not yet been reached. Another 200 meters of elevation gain must be overcome, initially only gently climbing on a gravel road. After the group of houses called Sattel, the road turns into a single trail, and the bike must be pushed repeatedly on this last section, unless you have calf strength like Nino Schurter – or, of course, an e-bike. But the pushing is worth it. The Durannapass with the Grüensee is an idyllic spot, and a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water is almost inevitable.

From the Durannapass, an extraordinarily long descent leads to Küblis. First, you cross the high plateau and then head into the descent trail near the Alp Obersäss. This is rough and demanding in the first section and can be bypassed via the gravel road. Slightly further down begins the next section of the descent: a smooth trail winds through the forest, at times a bit wet, but becoming increasingly flowing with distance. In this way, the descent covers a total of 1300 meters of elevation down directly to Küblis.

To reach the destination St. Antönien, it is best to hang the bike on the rear rack of the post bus and save yourself the 600-meter ascent. This is well invested, as one last bit of climbing is still necessary up to the Sulzfluh mountain hut. You take the post bus to the final stop Garstett and then follow the paved road up to Partnun. This adds another 130 meters of elevation, but you have earned the aperitif on the terrace of the Sulzfluh mountain hut!
