Stage 3: Spitzmeilen hut – Weisstannen, 73.03 Sardona World Heritage Trail

From the modern Spitzmeilen hut with a magnificent view of the Churfirsten/Alvier group through the colorful Triassic landscape of the Fans plateau. Fascinating is the view across the Chammseeli to the Triassic sequence at the Schnüerligrat.

Description
From the Spitzmeilen hut SAC at over 2000 m above sea level, it goes down to the small Walser village of Weisstannen at around 1000 m above sea level. In the first part of the stage, the holey, ochre-colored rauwacke and karst fields form ideal hideouts and tunnels for marmots. Past the Chammseeli, it goes to the Madfurggel, from where the Glarus thrust is clearly visible. The summit areas above the “magic line” consist of Verrucano rocks over 250–300 million years old – beneath them lie the 200 million years younger flysch rocks or limestones. The descent via Madfurggl is only recommended for sure-footed and confident mountain hikers. Those who are not confident of heights should descend at Fansfurggla into the Weisstannen valley. In Weisstannen, a visit to the museum “Post ab!” is worthwhile.
