Description

First, we find out when we can expect the sunrise at Piz Calmut. In mid-July, this is around 6 o’clock.

Since the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is still asleep, we set off by car to the Oberalppass. Everything is still quiet and peaceful and we hike on a forest road towards Pass Tiarms. After a few more switchbacks, we reach the summit cross and still have some time for a hot coffee, which we pour from our thermos flask. Wrapped in our down jackets because it is still quite fresh, we watch how the light and colors of the sky change. We look west, where the mountain range of Damma and Galenstock turns red. And east, where the haze casts light veils over the valley. Then it is time: The first sun rays overcome the horizon! Simply wonderful.

We descend over the soapstone quarry on the south side of Piz Calmut.

Hidden Gem

Dress warmly, it is usually very fresh and windy.

Directions

Behind the new gondola station, we find a signpost from where the hiking trail leads onto the forest road to Pass Tiarms. On the Tiarm ridge, the road branches off to the right and ends at the summit of Piz Calmut. The return route starts from the chairlift station on a hiking trail heading south to the soapstone quarry. From there, we follow the forest road back to Oberalppass

Directions

Public Transport

It is not possible to arrive by train for the sunrise.
