Description
The second stage of the Swiss Epic 2019 around St. Moritz makes every mountain biker's heart race with many flowing trails and breathtaking views. The course leads through the picturesque Bernina Valley to Morteratsch, where you can admire Piz Palü and the majestic Piz Bernina. Piz Bernina is, at 4,049 m above sea level, the only 4000-meter peak and thus the highest mountain in the canton of Graubünden. After a fun single trail, it goes back to Pontresina, where after about 38 km you face the longest and hardest climb of the route. From Samedan to the reservoir lake Lej Alv at 2,543 m above sea level – which was not only the highest point of this route but also of the entire Swiss Epic 2019 – more than 1,000 meters of altitude have to be overcome. The climb is worth the effort: once at the top, unique views await you, and on the way you will also enjoy the high trail from Alp Muntatsch to Marguns, which is part of the Padella Panorama route. This high trail is a demanding but excellent single trail peppered with a fantastic panorama of the Engadin and will make you forget the hardships of the climb. Afterwards, fun is guaranteed: From the highest point of the route, it goes onto the legendary ski racing piste in St. Moritz – which was part of three World Championships and is still part of the Women's Ski World Cup – where breathtaking views and a flowing descent await you. But that’s not all: To finish, the Foppettas Trail offers a unique combination of rollers, curves, and Northshore elements with a direct entry into the center of St. Moritz Bad and to a well-deserved evening beer.
A route that should be on the to-do list of every mountain bike enthusiast and provides a great insight into what ambitious amateurs and world-class mountain bikers achieve in the five-day mountain bike stage race Swiss Epic in Graubünden.
