Details
Description
The Three Passes Round Route promises varied mountain landscapes with both alpine and Mediterranean charm.
From Thusis, the route leads through the impressive Viamala Gorge into the idyllic Val Schons, past Zillis and Andeer and further along the Roffla Gorge into the Rheinwald to Splügen. Over the Splügen Pass, we reach the Mediterranean Chiavenna at an altitude of 333 m above sea level. At the Splügen Pass, we cross the Italian border. From Chiavenna, it goes east into the deeply incised Bergell valley, climbing towards Castasegna, where we return to Swiss territory. The route steadily rises over Vicosoprano and Casaccia to Maloja. Arriving at the Maloja Pass, the Maloja wind at our back, the route relaxingly follows the Silsersee to Silvaplana. Over the Julier Pass at an altitude of 2,284 m above sea level, the highest point of this round route, we reach Bivio and continue along the Marmorera Reservoir past Mulegns, Tiniziong and Savognin to Tiefencastel. After one last ascent from Tiefencastel to Alvaschein, the route follows the Schin Gorge downstream back to Thusis.
