Tomülpass and Strätscherhorn in the Safien valley
Show all 9 images
A varied snowshoe route in the upper Safien valley. You climb a historic pass and a perfect snowshoe summit. The Tomülpass is a pack animal pass known for centuries and is now frequently used in summer by hikers and bikers. The "Polenweg," which leads over the pass, lies under a deep layer of snow in winter.

Description
Start at the Turrahus restaurant. Those who want to refresh themselves before or after the route are perfectly right at the 300-year-old Walser house. The ascent via the old pass path does not start as flat as ideal for warming up, but you quickly gain altitude. Around the Falätscher hut, the trail flattens a bit again, allowing for a good rest. At about 2100 meters above sea level, a short but very steep slope must be overcome. This section is often tricky and should only be tackled under safe conditions. In the last 300 meters of altitude, the mountain scenery becomes increasingly exciting and impressive. We often move near the historic pass route, which is certainly hardly visible under the deep snow cover.
At the Tomülpass, you can either descend by a small additional loop on the ascent route or take the Strätscherhorn under your snowshoes. The beautiful high plateau towards the summit is an excellent experience and definitely worth it. After about 150 meters of altitude gain, you reach the summit and can now descend over the broad shoulder. We provide the variant directly to Wanna here. However, you can also take the longer route via Alp Pianetsch. For both variants, it is essential to pay attention to the wildlife protection zones.

Safety Note
Ski and snowshoe tours in unsecured terrain require good knowledge of avalanche hazard assessment and tour planning. Furthermore, a complete safety equipment must always be carried – regardless of the current avalanche danger.
We recommend the WhiteRisk app and website for preparation and tour planning.
For carefree enjoyment, we recommend our mountain guides and snowshoe tour leaders of the Surselva region.
