Abbey Wine Press - Klostertorkel

Klostertorkel
Klostertorkel
The Klostertorkel in Maienfeld, a historic building from the 17th century, once served as the wine press of the Churwaldner monastery estate. Today, it belongs to the Kultur Herrschaft association and stands as a testament to medieval architecture.

Description

The abbey wine press, together with the courtyard (today's Haus Enderlin v. Montzwick, diagonally opposite), once belonged to the Churwalden abbey. After the Reformation it was looted and the Abbey lost its assets in Maienfeld. The current owner is the association "Kultur Herrschaft". The volume of the wine press indicates that it was built in the 17th century. However, the structure's history reaches back to the Middle Ages.
