Remote castle ruins above the Scalära ravine, once the seat of the Knights of Ruchenberg, with an impressive residential tower and palace remains.

Description

The ruins of Ober-Ruchenberg Castle are secluded on a wooded mountain spur between Chur and Trimmis, high above the Scalära ravine. As early as 1232, the complex is documented as the residence of the Knights of Ruchenberg, before it became the property of other noble families in the course of the 14th century. Around the year 1500, the castle was probably finally abandoned after a fire.

Access is via an area protected by a neck ditch that leads to a plateau with traces of dry stone walls. These probably belong to former outbuildings. The actual core castle consisted of a robust residential tower and an attached palas. Today, mainly the basic structures and a few remains of walls are visible, which nevertheless give a good idea of the former expansion of the complex.

The residential tower formed the centre of the castle. Together with the Palas, it shaped the appearance of the complex and served as a fortified living and retreat space. The two offshore plateaus west of the core castle also belong to the historic castle area, even if no walls are preserved there. The location of the castle is strategically striking, as it overlooks the crossing in the Fürstenwald and the paths between Trimmis and Chur.

Visitors can reach the ruins either from the Rhine Valley via Trimmis or from the Fürstenwald. The ascent is via well-signposted paths, partly on steep forest paths. Access is possible all year round, with no restrictions or entrance fees. Photography is allowed without any problems. There are no restaurants or rest areas around the castle - the atmosphere therefore remains particularly quiet and natural.

Today, thanks to its impressive location and historic ambience, the ruins invite you to take an atmospheric hike with authentic medieval flair.
