Culur - Art in public spaces
To celebrate two 25th anniversaries – of the construction of the holding reservoir dam in Maloja-Orden, and of the nearby Salecina holiday and education centre – a competition was announced for the creation of an artwork for the dam. Both Gottfried Honegger and the artist couple Petruschka and Hannes Vogel submitted designs. At a meeting in Salecina, various individuals and groups, including residents of the Val Bregaglia, opted for Honegger’s concept: 9 columns, painted in the colours of the rainbow, to be placed on the dam. Culur was inaugurated at a public ceremony on 9 August 1997. Gottfried Honegger, the artist with the Lower Engadine and Zurich roots, died on 17 January 2016th In June, he could take up his 100th birthday. The socialist without party membership has Salecina installation Culur given: the nine columns on the flood-protection wall and a tenth in Salecina. It is his most striking works in the Grisons.
