Kapelle Butz Mels
Chapel with worthwhile view

Description

It is the youngest chapel in the parish of Mels. The first donation to a fund for the construction of a chapel on the Vorderberg was made by Ungenannt in 1892. But the residents could not agree on the construction site for a long time. On 4 November 1928, the church comrades' assembly decided to build the chapel on the current building site on "Lütschbord". Architect Johannes Scheier, St. Gallen, carried out the construction in 1938/39. The choice of the place with the view of the Falknis-, Gonzen- and Alvierkette, down to the Seez- and wide Rhine plain, in the back of the Melserberg, was very happy. The building, tower, vestibule and main building also combine to form a beautiful triad. The unadorned nature of the building shows kinship with Sargans Castle and the distant chapel of St. Georgen near Berschis. The chapel was painted by Ferdinand Gehr. St. Anthony of Padua kneels on the inner back wall. The altarpiece shows figures of purgatory in the altar niche. The main image is the Transfiguration of Christ. The whole composition of the pictures depicts the suffering, quarrelling ( by John the Baptist ) and the triumphant church. The wall painting shows images from the life of Christ: the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the Annunciation of the Shepherds, the Birth of Christ, the Flight to Egypt and the Mother of Sorrows. on the artistic value and even more on the question of whether these images spur the people to devotion, the views are so far very divided. In September 1939, the solemn consecration of the chapel by the most reverend Bishop Josephus Meile of St. Gallen took place.
