UNESCO Welterbe Tektonikarena Sardona

The imposing mountain ranges of the Sardona Tectonic Arena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a unique example of the formation of mountains. In the fascinating mountain landscape around Piz Sardona in the border area of the cantons of St. Gallen, Glarus and Graubünden, tectonic processes can be observed in a vivid way that is unique in the world. Along the line visible from afar, the "Glarus main thrust", 250-300 million-year-old rocks pushed over a distance of about 40 kilometres onto much younger, 35-50 million year old rocks. The 300 km2 area is a witness to mountain formations and is of great educational and scientific importance. The fascination of this landscape can be experienced up close on various hiking and biking trails, when visiting one of the interesting geological sites or on a geological tour. The Sardona World Heritage Trail leads hikers from Filzbach to Flims through the heart of the core area.
