Wanderuang durch das "Verlorna Loch"

Guided hike. The section between Thusis and Rongellen is a masterpiece of early road construction from 1818 to 1823 and an extraordinary engineering achievement of the time. On the way you will learn a lot about this art road and how it was possible to build the street in such a special place.

The hike begins in Thusis at the south roundabout and leads past the north portal of the safety tunnel of the crapteig tunnel. The restored Graubünden fence with stone stelae gives an idea that a special building begins here. Past the former Wegmacher building (built before 1890), the hike goes gently uphill. We explain the fountain and memorial stone we pass and reach the place in front of the Känzeli, which was structurally renovated in the years 2020-2023. The Känzeli with a view into the depths and to the High Raetia shows us that the engineers wanted to build a road that would be beautiful and scenic and that would connect Germany and Italy in almost the shortest way, not only for the transport of goods, but also for travelers.
After the Känzeli we pass through a short tunnel – a sensation for the time. After the tunnel, the road leads cut into the rock along the vertical high gorge wall, which still makes you shudder today, to Rongellen to the post bus station.

• Duration: approx. 2 hours
• Return by post bus from Rongellen to Thusis at 4.14 p.m.
• Hiking distance 2.1 km, altitude difference uphill 150 m
• Clothing and equipment appropriate to the weather as well as good footwear are recommended
• The hike is carried out with at least 5 paying persons
• Children up to 16 years old are free of charge
• In the event of exceptional weather conditions, the guided tour will be cancelled by telephone at 12.00 noon on the day of the event.
