CINEMA | BIOPIC
The Manns - A Novel of the Century is a 2001 family saga directed by Heinrich Breloer and starring Armin Mueller-Stahl and Monica Bleibtreu.
The third part of the award-winning docu-drama The Manns – A Novel of the Century is dedicated to the life of the famous Mann family of writers from 1942 to 1955.
Thomas Mann lives with his wife Katia and daughter Elisabeth in Pacific Palisades, where he becomes politically active through his radio speeches "Deutsche Hörer!". But despite his reputation in the USA, he feels torn inside, while his brother Heinrich lives in poverty and becomes increasingly dependent on Thomas. Heinrich's wife Nelly, plagued by alcohol problems, finally takes her own life.
.
The children Klaus and Erika were involved in the war against the Nazis, but after the war they get into an identity crisis. Klaus is overwhelmed by his morphine addiction and commits suicide in 1949. Heinrich Mann died in 1950 before he was able to travel to the GDR.
In 1952, Thomas, Katia and Erika returned to Europe and settled in Switzerland. Thomas experiences new appreciation in West Germany, but Erika remains critical of the visits to Germany. Shortly before his death in 1955, Thomas visited his hometown of Lübeck, where he was awarded honorary citizenship.
