Event Davos Klosters
Annemarie Schwarzenbach. Stationen einer Sehnsucht
Description
The dramatic, short life of the Swiss author and world traveler.
EXPERIENCE | PERFORMATIVE
The short, dramatic life of the Swiss author Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942) is marked by adventurous journeys all over the world, a passionate thirst for knowledge and her unreserved love for other women. She reacts intensively, sensitively and intelligently to the circumstances of her time, writes against fascism in Europe and fights against her sadness and addictions.
.
For this portrait, Vera Bauer researched countless unpublished letters from the estate. In collaboration with the musician Jelena Goldzycher, she creates significant access to Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who, torn between the world of her traditional, conservative family of origin and the world of her 'adopted family' of Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann, leads an unsettled life far from all conventions – courageous, free, ruthless with herself, at the same time deeply in need of love and, despite all her mental strength, inwardly fragile. In the midst of such tensions, Annemarie Schwarzenbach creates an extensive literary oeuvre of novellas and travel essays, which was honoured in May 2025 with inclusion in the UNESCO register 'Memory of the world'.
.
The musically staged stage play portrays Annemarie Schwarzenbach's life in its splendour and abyss: a life plan that points far beyond its time; a fate that challenges, fascinates and moves.
