Sniffers on four paws

Sniffer dogs in the fight against the biodiversity crisis? The Swiss Species Detection Dogs Association is committed to the preservation of biodiversity. Specially trained sniffer dogs can detect endangered or invasive species, e.g. by searching for and displaying animal droppings, nests or carcasses. Depending on the scent of the target, the dogs search in an extensive area search, along predefined transects or in a detailed fine search.

Look over our shoulders when man's best friend becomes a conservationist and uses his nose to collect valuable data for us. How exactly does this work and what does it take to turn a family dog into a species conservation hero?
