Life on the River: The Alpine Rhine from Reichenau to Buchs 1790-2020
Luca Locher's work deals with life on the Alpine Rhine over a long period of time. The river has always meant an opportunity and a danger at the same time: it was necessary to protect oneself from flooding, with the construction of the river and corrections to the course of the river. On the other hand, it was the most elegant form of transport for a long time and was used to transport goods. Hydropower was used in many ways early on and gravel and sand were extracted from the riverbed. More recently, environmental aspects have gained in importance and led to revitalization efforts. Overall, the presentation provides rich illustrative material for the interactions between humans and the environment. The depiction begins with the "Wuhr Treaty" of 1790 between the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Lordship of Werdenberg. Solutions to the problems on the Alpine Rhine had to be found and still have to be found in close cooperation between different rulers, cantons and countries.
