Cinema: "Evil does not exist" in Ilanz

Takumi and his daughter Hana live in Mizubiki Village near Tokyo. They lead a modest life in harmony with nature and appreciate seclusion. However, the peace is disturbed when a company from Tokyo presents plans to build a glamping facility in the immediate vicinity. It quickly becomes clear that the luxury campsite will have serious consequences for the water supply and the lives of the villagers.

After his Oscar-winning film "Drive My Car", Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "Evil Does Not Exist" is a poetic parable about the complex relationship between humans and nature. This subtly and precisely narrated film – which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival – proves once again that Hamaguchi is one of the most exciting voices in independent cinema.
