Hundreds of Graubünden residents left their homeland between 1600 and 1900 to try their luck as confectioners and cafetiers in numerous European cities, including those from Poschiavo and Bregaglia. Many did good business. They returned to their villages with considerable wealth, built houses, brought new ideas to the valleys and became involved in the communities. But many were also denied luck.
