Design on the Rhine: Live presentation of the chandelier by Fabio Hendry in Trun

Six large-format chandeliers in the Catholic Church of St. Martin in Trun explore the dialogue between baroque architecture, contemporary design and experimental materials research

For the baroque church of St. Martin in Trun, Fabio Hendry designed six almost three-metre-high chandeliers that impressively combine contemporary design with sacred space. The luminaires respond to the opulent interior design beyond historical quotations and assert themselves in the room with an independent, material-based presence.

The chandeliers consist of seven arms – a symbolic and functional gesture – and are made from a mixture of marble sand and recycled nylon powder, a waste product from industrial 3D printing. The material is thermally fused by embedded heating wires – a specially developed manufacturing process that does not require molds and eliminates waste.
The project exemplifies Hendry's practice: At the interface of trade, research and industry, he searches for ecologically responsible forms of production and new potentials of overlooked materials. The installation sees itself as a cultural statement and reactivates the church as a place of contemporary design and collective identity.
