«The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant»

Family Concert

In the summer of 1940, the composer Francis Poulenc visited friends in the countryside. One of his little nieces came to him at the piano and put the book The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant by Jean de Brunhoff on the music stand: "Play me this story." He began to improvise and wrote down those motifs that she liked. He abandoned the project due to urgent work, but five years later this same niece asked him again to play that story. And this time Poulenc composed until he had completed it. This is how L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant for piano and narrator was born – the story of the little elephant who comes to humans as a child and tries to live a life like a human being.
