Excursion "Forest-Climate-Research" in the Safien Valley

In many Swiss forests, under the climatic conditions that can be expected towards the end of the 21st century, other tree species will thrive better than those that grow here today. The research project "Test plantings of sustainable tree species" is therefore investigating how trees cope with the increasingly warmer and drier climate in summer. On the excursion to the forest in the Safien Valley, we will visit one of the 59 Swiss test plots. The Safiental Forestry Office will be on site to show how the different tree species are developing and how the project is being implemented in practice.

When you consider that 30% of the municipality of Safiental is forested and that the Safier Forest has a primary protective function in addition to its diverse functions, it becomes clear how crucial a long-term healthy forest is for the inhabitants of the valley. With the Switzerland-wide research project of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Eidg. At the WSL research institute, various forest sites are being compared in order to find out whether sustainable tree species can already be promoted at locations such as the Safiental.
