The Story
Jakov, a 70-year-old coffin carpenter, lives with his wife Marfa in a small town. Because only a few die, the two are in a bad way. Every now and then, when a Jew is missing from the orchestra, Jakov earns a few kopecks by playing his violin as a substitute. He is constantly annoyed by the flutist Rothschild playing next to him, because with him the funniest melody always sounds sad ...
